Marion Monroe Harter, 99, of Chillicothe, Missouri passed away on November 20, 2025 at Livingston Manor, in Chillicothe.
Marion was born on June 8, 1926 in St. Joseph, Missouri to parents Austin and Dolly (Courter) Harter. On June 2, 1950, he married Sue Rose Mounce. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2020. Following his graduation from high school in St. Joseph, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served aboard the USS Duluth. Following his naval service from 1944-1946, he received a Bachelor’s in Aeronautical Engineering and Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas. During his career as an engineer, he helped to design several dams in the US Army Corps of Engineers, including working as the chief engineer for Bagnell Dam. In 1976, he became the chief engineer of the Design Branch of the Engineering Division, US Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City district. He supervised seventy engineers and technicians, as well as taking responsibility for every aspect of a structure’s design. Following his work there, he led a safety program for Farmer’s Electric Cooperative in Chillicothe.
He was a member of numerous groups and organizations; American Society of Testing & Materials, NRA, Genealogical Society of Missouri, Moila Shrine, Masonic Lodge in Leavenworth, KS, Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church, as well as serving as lay worship leader and Eucharistic minister.
Marion enjoyed spending time with his family, making stained glass, painting, carving, drawing cartoons, and collecting Star Trek.
Marion is survived by his daughter Rosina Harter, and husband George. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Visitation for Marion will be from 3 to 5 PM on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at Heritage Funeral Home, with service the next day, Monday, November 24, 2025 at 11 AM at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Utica Cemetery.
Memorials in honor of Marion Monroe Harter may be made to Grace Episcopal Church or the Forrest O. Triplett Memorial Animal Shelter.
