Gerald DeWitt

Gerald Harris DeWitt, 87, of Chillicothe MO passed away August 16, 2013 at his residence in Chillicothe.
Gerald DeWitt was born in Hale, MO on June 1, 1926, the son of Laverne and Opal Harris DeWitt.  When he was very young the family moved to Wheeling MO and Gerald graduated from Wheeling High School.
He entered the United States Army in October 1944 and was wounded in action in Okinawa and was discharged in September of 1945.He served as a private first class in the 32nd  infantry regiment during World War II.
On January 16, 1971 Gerald married Helen “Annie” Lightner Strait in the Free Methodist Church of Chillicothe. She survives of the home.
Gerald worked in heavy construction, building highways most of his life.
Gerald was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 101 in Kansas City, MO. He was a life member of the Roy L. Burkett VFW Post 858 of Chillicothe and was also a life member of American Legion Post 25 in Chillicothe.
His survivors include his wife, Helen Ann listed above; two daughters Connie Cordell (Bill – deceased) of Omaha NE and Darla Barnert (Ben – deceased) of Breckenridge CO; four grandchildren, Kristofer Cordell of Olathe KS, Matthew Cordell of Omaha NE, Elizabeth Barnert Wetzler (Andrew) of New York, NY and Lance Corporal Andrew Barnert of the USMC; three brothers, Bill DeWitt of Texas, Larry DeWitt of Kansas City MO and Richard DeWitt of Warsaw MO; many nieces and nephews.
Gerald was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Stanley DeWitt and a sister, Lois Allen.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials in honor of Gerald DeWitt may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Alzheimers Association and left at or mailed to Heritage Funeral Home 3141 N. Washington, Chillicothe, MO 64601. On line condolences may be left at www.heritage-becausewecare.com .
There has been a cremation.
Memorial Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on August 25, 2013 at Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe.
There will be a private family burial.
A visitation will be held after the service at Heritage Funeral Home Chillicothe, MO.
Arrangements are pending under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home, Chillicothe, MO.
